The Greatest Game ever created?

Is there any doubt as to which game started it all? No, not pong. While pong was a major breakthrough, it’s not what I had in mind. Quite simply ID’s DOOM broke the mold. To this day, it remains a staple of the gaming community. Now, we could argue the merits of the Doom of today vs. classic Doom perhaps at another time. For me, there is no discussion to be had, but put that aside. Hall, Romero, and Carmack. Three legendary names in gaming. Now, imagine being there, part of it all. What I would give…

When people ask that question… If you could have done anything with your career, what path would you have chosen? I would simply say.. “I wish I was part of the original Doom development team”. Yes, of course there was Wolfenstein 3D which predated Doom by about one year, but we’re talking about the same legendary team. I view Wolfenstein as the alpha release of Doom. Clearly, it’s a different game, but the seeds of what would become Doom are all over that game. Doom invented the jump-scare. The games that are popular today, the genre that is so popular today, are available today because of… DOOM.

I think you are starting to see how I feel about this game. It set the standard. It created the generation of developers that now work for Bethesda, EA, and so on. Now, in complete candor, I come from a computer based background, and understand code. I admit that this love fest is a bit jaded. Regardless, Doom is not here today because of geeks like me. Classic Doom is alive and well due to a community that is passionate about preserving and breathing new life into an effort that not only changed gaming; It changed our culture. Make no mistake, you’re going to see quite a bit of Doom based activity here on this site. It’s a passion which I feel the need to share and discuss further.
